He entered the NHL in 1985 in Detroit, signed by the Wings along with more highly-celebrated Ray Staszak in a double signing of the most sought-after college free agents, the Justin Schultz’ of their day. That had hardly been a problem in Oates’ earlier days. Still, Oiler fans saw glimpses of the player that had been, even as their squad didn’t have a top notch finisher to convert his occasional sweet passes.
